The Godfather of Google’s Artificial Intelligence team has quit the project to spread the alarm about how dangerous the technology can be.
Geoffrey Hinton, one of Google’s top techs and who is considered the company’s “godfather of AI,” is now one of AI’s biggest critics.

Hinton worked at Google for more than a decade and is responsible for a 2012 tech breakthrough that serves as the foundation of current AIs like ChatGPT. He announced his resignation from Google in a statement to the New York Times, saying he now regrets his work.
“I console myself with the normal excuse: If I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have,” he told the paper.
“It is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things,” Hinton went on to say of AI.
Hinton says that it has advanced extremely quickly and that if it continues progressing along this pace, it will be astonishing.
“Look at how it was five years ago and how it is now,” Hinton said. “Take the difference and propagate it forwards. That’s scary.”
Elon Musk has also warned about the pitfalls of AI.
“Mr. Musk has warned for years that poorly built artificial intelligence could have catastrophic effects on humanity. Since OpenAI’s ChatGPT became a viral sensation last November, Mr. Musk has denounced it as politically correct and warned it could lead AI to become too powerful for humans to control,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
Perhaps more frightening, the Pentagon has admitted that it is developing AI that can make its own decisions on whether to shoot to kill.
